PAT Testing

What is PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing, or PAT Testing, consists of checks which are carried out on electrical appliances at regular intervals, to ensure they are safe.

Why is PAT Testing necessary?

For businesses, PAT Testing is needed to ensure the safety of all employees within the business. Regulation 4 (2) of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 states that: "As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger."

PAT Testing forms an essential part of any program of maintenance.

For landlords, PAT Testing of any appliances in the property is also important, to ensure the safety of tenants.

What does PAT Testing involve?

PAT Testing involves an inspection of the appliance followed by tests which vary depending on the type of appliance. The inspection and test results are compiled in an equipment register, which records all the items tested, whether they passed or failed the testing and when the next test is due.

What are the costs?

Unlike many PAT Testing companies, Orchard Electrical Services does not set a minimum charge, as we feel this is unfair to smaller businesses who may only have a small number of appliances to test. Our testing is carried out by a qualified engineer, and our fees are individually tailored and always include the following, at no additional cost:

  • Replacement of faulty fuses
  • Replacement of damaged standard plug-tops
  • Shortening of damaged flexible cables, where feasible
